A design is a blueprint or description of an object, structure or system and/or for the constructive implementation of such a plan or specification or the outcome of such a plan or specifications in the form of a finished product, machine or process. The verb to design generally refers to the process of designing a design. It is often used in a generic sense to denote designs which may take many forms. It has various other senses in common use. It can mean the drawing of a plan, the making of a model from plans, or simply the creation of a blueprint for building things.
The creative process and its impact on the creative process is best described by Clausewitz. His approach to military strategy is “the way, the wind falls”. For example, a general might observe that a new weapon, new equipment, or some other thing of great value was justly essential to winning the next battle, and he would pursue his program of activity by making plans for it. This military plan could then be considered a good design. However, if the general committed a tactical error by not carefully considering the tactical consequences of his action, his new weapon would probably fail to achieve its assigned objectives.
The same principle applies to language. English has many words that convey various meanings. Thus, designers of software, editors, marketers, researchers, students, etc. have all had to learn a wide variety of words to effectively communicate their ideas and concepts. The word “design” has come to mean a wide range of things.
There are some designers who have adopted the “good design” as a meaning of the word. Their aim is to create an attractive and well-functioning new product that meets the needs of consumers. A typical example of this might be the efforts of Apple Computer Corporation to design the best personal computer that ever was. At the same time, some people believe that the word design can also mean the creation of a beautiful new product that sells very well.
When we study industrial design at college, we learn about the importance of planning. Planning is one of the important aspects of successful design. When we add the word “planner” to the end of the meaning of design, it helps us understand that the designers must think carefully before they undertake any task.
In addition, a careful analysis of the results of their designing also helps them to deliver clear and deep meaning. Research has shown that people tend to remember things that they do not fully comprehend. Therefore, when designing a product, designers must keep in mind how it will be appreciated by consumers. They should take care that the end product does not confuse the buyers.
